To the citizens of Williamsburg:

My name is Laura Pugh and I am part of William & Mary’s Colleges Against Cancer club. As a group, we organize and participate in advocacy and educational activities throughout the school year. In October, our club held a Breast Cancer Rally that provided information and pink ribbons to promote awareness of and active participation in cancer prevention, detection and treatment. We also held a Relay for Life Kickoff to register students and get the campus excited about our event as early as October.  This year, we also sent a representative to the South Atlantic Relay for Life Summit, which gave us new motivation and inspiration for how to make this year’s Relay the best that William & Mary has ever seen.

Relay For Life is the largest event we participate in annually. It is an overnight fundraiser and the American Cancer Society's signature event. This year the event will take place April 13-14 on Busch Field on the W&M campus. The event is set up like a relay: teams are asked to keep at least one member walking around the track at all times. Cancer never sleeps, so neither will we! Activities and performances continue throughout the night, and there are three major time blocks to this dynamic event: Celebrate, Remember, and Fight Back. We begin with a Survivor Lap and special reception in celebration of people who are battling or have overcome cancer. Then, we continue with a Luminaria Ceremony at night, a touching time for reflection and reverence. In the morning, we finish with pledges to actively fight cancer in the future.

Survivors are the most integral part of the event and we would love to share the magical Relay experience with you. You are invited to register for free as a Survivor on a team or independently at www.relay.org/wm. If you have any questions, please contact Laura Pugh (Recruitment Chair) at lepugh@email.wm.edu. We hope to see you in April!

Sincerely,

Laura Pugh

Learning from Our Past  You are invited to be part of an exciting and important initiative of the College of William and Mary.  On Saturday, March 17, a symposium is offered to the public as part of the ongoing Lemon Project, a work of racial reconciliation and the continuing healing of our American culture.  The Lemon Project was established in 2009 after the College’s Board recognized, as has the Episcopal Church, that we “owned and exploited slave labor” and prolonged segregation during the Jim Crow Era.  Though the symposium is free, registration is required.  To register, go to http://www.wm.edu/sites/lemonproject/2012%20Symposium/index.php. The event is from 9:30am-4:00pm, at the Bruton Heights School.  (Check-in and Continental Breakfast begins at 8:30am.)  Church favorites Bob Engs, Terry Meyers and Barbara Watson have all been involved with this project.

Greetings from Hampton University!

We are currently offering a new grant program called, “Grant Yourself an Education.” Exclusive to Hampton Roads and Richmond area students, these grants will allow students to better afford a sterling education in one of the east coast’s leading private HBCU’s.

Students who submit completed application packets by February 20th and meet the general admission requirements will be eligible for this grant. There are no additional forms or requirements necessary for consideration. Students receiving the grant will be awarded amounts of up to $5,000!

It would be greatly appreciated if you would take the time to print out and hang the following flyer on your community board or youth hall to inform prospective students of our efforts and opportunities available for our grant.

Thanks in advance.
